Photography is the art of catching world in a piece of paper. Photography is very close to nature and all nature lovers’ love photography. Apart from the art, photography is also a profession for people and they earn handsome money from the clicked photos. But selling photography is not so easy. It is really hard to find out the exact price and right customers for your photos. Novice photographers usually assume lower price for their photos and struggle to make reputation in the market. All one need is to understand the concept of market and plan accordingly. We will show you some points that you can take care while selling your phptos. These points will help you to get right price for your hard work. The points are:

1. Identify your buyers: The art buyers can be divided into three categories. They are collectors, admirers and consumers.

  • Art collectors: The art collectors collect good art for financial investment and then sell them at higher prices. These people are purely professional and have complete knowledge of photography world. They are aware of craft and good relationships with all the famous photographers in their area. This however is not a good choice for photographers as they do not right reward for their work and also do not reach the target audience.
  • Art Admirers: The second category is of art admirers. The art admirers buy art for the sake of art only. Some art admirers know the art world very well but usually don’t spend much due to shortage of money. Some are only attracted to art world but do not have much information about art world. There are also people who want to be art admirers and are overly vigilant while buying art. They just want to buy something unique and different from what they already own and such people can be easy target of a new artist who has the taste for unique and creative photography.
  • Consumer: Consumers are those who really spend money in buying art and are right target for photography sellers. The bad thing about consumers is that they prefer quantity over quality. Such buyers are very easy to find but they are not ready to pay higher prices. For them quality don’t matter much but they just want to buy photography at the cheapest price.

There is another set of buyer in the market that can be a classified into any of the above categories, and these are those who just decide to buy something on the spot. They don’t have any prior decision about buying something. Some of them buy because they're just on vacation and this happy impulse makes them to go for buying some photos as prints on canvas or paper. Basically this is an unreliable and an unpredictable set of customers, but one can easily attract such customer by displaying something very unique and giving some special discounts. With this kind of market, it usually becomes very hard to find right customers for your photos. In most of the purposes right customers are art admirers as they can give right price to you.

    2. Selecting Sale Venue: Artists can sell their photography at art fairs, festivals and other art galleries. These venues may not give you much revenue but they allow you to directly communicate with your customers. These venues can also turn into awards and ribbons for your art. You will also be benefited by knowing the people in art community. This increases the sense of competition and ultimately improves your work. Art centers are mainly organizes photography events and provide you the platform to enter in the competition. Some art galleries also conduct “blind juried competition”. In these competitions judges don’t know about the artists and hence comes out as the best platform for new photographers. The best part of these venues is that they help you to grow your network. You can send announcement postcards to your customers and inform them about your latest work. Selling your photography at art galleries and festivals gives you good opportunity to market yourself and find new customers. Also, while placing your photos, keep trace of photographs near you. A 1000$ photography has less probability to get sold when it is placed next to 100$ photo.

    3. Ready yourself for Sale: After selecting your sale venue, you need to ready yourself for the sale. Getting ready for sale does not mean that you should select what to do, when to do etc. but it means to make a strategy on how to sell your photography. You can optimize your photos by framing them. Try to patch up with other photographers as it helps you to save selling space. Moreover, you can get to learn many things from other photographers.

    4. Select price for your art: While selling your photography you should assure that your photos should look fine and have nice framing on them. Photographers should also think in the term of the buyers. Buyers usually think that cheap things are of poor quality and bend towards expensive items. Never underrate yourself and always demand the real cost for your photos. Do not demand too high or low for them. Similar to the marketing, brands sell in art too. Artists having high reputation in the market get high rewards. If you do not have any brand name, then you can opt for a very useful technique called comparative analysis for selecting price for your art. According to this technique, price should be selected according to the price of other photos. If you keep your price to 2/3 of the most expensive picture, then you have highest probability of selling your photography. Most of the buyers compare prices while buying items and they usually go for slightly less costly than most expensive. Therefore, it is good idea to set your prices after comparing with others. Apart from this, compliments also play vital role in selling your photography. For example, one well framed photo will lend you more money than an unframed one. People like things which look beautiful, so always try to decorate your photos with frames, hangings etc.

Deal friendly with your customers and also tell them theme/aim of your photos. It would be better if your can write some words on each of your photography. This will increase the value of your photos and would increase your reputation. Try to give some facilities like shipping, various means of money transfer to your customers. More convenience you provide to your customers, more comfortable they will be for you. Also provide consistency in your work. This will attract art lovers towards your art and you will get reward for you work. Keep yourself open for all the means of selling your photography. For example, these days internet is also providing platform to sell photos. We are trying to help photographers here at our photo forum by providing large pool of customers worldwide ensuring it reaches to art lovers, who care for your art like you.
